Calamansi’s Homegrown and Healthy Goodness

No one can deny – any beverage or drink is a staple in every meal. Our dining experience at home and even in restaurants are not complete without any cold or hot beverage.

One of the most well-loved beverages in our restaurants is our freshly-squeezed Calamansi Juice. It’s one of the home-made juices of Malagos Garden Resort. We know how every so often, you try and recreate it at home with real calamansi or store-bought calamansi puree.

Calamansi is also known as the Philippine Lemon, which is slightly smaller than the American Lemon and has a lime-like color on the outside. It is indigenous to the Philippines and is considered a major fruit crop of the country. The plant has wing-like appendages on the leaf stalks and produces white or purple flowers. The fruit has a spongy or leathery rind and has a juicy pulp that is divided into sections.

The Calamansi fruit has an average diameter of 25 - 35 mm and can be produced year - round. Its peak season is between the months of July and October, while its lean season is from November to May. Farmers usually harvest and sell the fruits in its unripe, green form. The Department of Agriculture (DA) has identified calamansi as "one of the most important fruit crops grown in the Philippines." In terms of area and production, it ranks fourth to banana, mango, and pineapple.

The Philippine lemon or “Lemonsito” gained recognition because of its unique properties of desirable sour-sweet taste and high Vitamin C content. Similar to other citrus fruits, Calamansi fruit has been widely utilized or processed into puree, concentrates, syrups and ready-to-drink juices. The pure juice extract of this fruit was also part of Filipino cuisine as condiments or sauce dip, marinade sauce, meat and fish tenderizer and is sometimes used as an alternative to vinegar. Extraction of the juice is done by manually cutting the top part/hat and then squeezing the juice out.

Calamansi ready-to-drink juice is very well known in the country. The drink is sweetened with either honey or sugar. One fact unknown to all, especially to many Filipinos, about the Calamansi is that its peel also contains medicinal properties. According to a recent study, Calamansi peel extract solution has the potential for lowering blood glucose which further implies that it could be used and developed into an herbal medicine that will help in addressing Diabetes.

Aside from being a popular ingredient to our favorite nutritious juice, Calamansi lends a bright note or improves the flavor to any local dish. It’s also squeezed onto the Filipino version of congee, called arroz caldo or lugaw. It can also be mixed with soy sauce and garlic for a dipping sauce or even a vinaigrette to your healthy salad mix.
