Supporting Local: A Celebration for the Local Farmers

Support Local Farmer

For years now, the local agriculture of Davao City has been very colorful. From Cacao, Bananas, all the way to Durians, we have it all in our City. Our local farmers have been true in their service to us-- they offer nothing short when it comes to farm fresh produce. On top of this, some of them even took the extra step and introduced our products internationally.

This year, when everything went downhill due to the onset of the coronavirus, our local farmers, despite being one of the severely hit industries, were the first to come forward in a bayanihan act for our City. They were quick to coordinate with the government into making sure that the food assistance given to us is not merely composed of canned goods and instant noodles. They stepped up and offered their fresh produce too. This enabled the government to  provide fresh produce as “rasyon” and at the same time, assist the local farmers in this trying time too.

Recently, the local government of Davao City gave an update on the locked down Barangay 23-C. It featured local farmers carrying sacks of fresh produce they have donated for the barangay. With all these generous acts, how can we in turn support them?

  1. Join Causes that Support our Local Farmers- There are various organizations in our country that supports our local farmers. By joining and enjoining more people to participate in the cause, we can reach a wider scope of audience into making the support local farmers movement a brighter and bigger one.

  2. Practice Fair Trade, Avoid Haggling- The prices offered by our local farmers and the small percentage retailers put on top of it is the most they can afford. Growing is not easy and it takes time for certain produce to be ready for harvest. If we take the time to know more on how much hard work is put into growing produce – from expenses, labor, seeds and time, we would know how important it is to pay a fair price to our food producers.

  3. Eat at Farm-to-Table Restaurants- This is a type of movement that focuses on producing locally-grown produce and using it in restaurants. It’s a little expensive compared to eating anywhere else but it gives you the peace of mind that you know where your food is coming from. The farmers get fair prices for their produce and these are freshly delivered to customers as meals. The Malagos Homegrown Produce offers farm-to-table meal kits and gulay bundles that are readily available anytime you need it. With our same-day delivery, you will get what you need fresh, homegrown, and in a heartbeat.

  4. Help Farmers Market Themselves- As much as it is important to buy from our local farmers, the little things like leaving a good review for the public will do wonders. Putting in a good word and endorsing it as much will help them more than you can imagine. After all, nothing beats a word by mouth recommendation from someone who has already experienced it.
