The Root of Filipinos' Plant Craze

They say that we all live in a routine. Somehow, if you really think about it, this rings a certain truth to it. For the past years, we have been doing the exact same thing. Perhaps in different schedules but still, we know what will happen next. The onset of the pandemic shook all these. Most work now has to be done at home, deadlines at work more often than not collide with the kids’ homework at school, and the line separating our personal, work, and social lives have been blurred. But still, we cope up in ways we can. These past few days, we have all been raving about the plant craze going around town. More often than not, people we meet around are carrying a small, quaint indoor plant and a pot. One moment, most of us were all grappling with the concept of bartering. Then in an instant, backyard gardening in Davao has been a thing. People are now more interested in where to buy plants online in Davao. But why is it that most of us are easily drawn to this concept?

Growing plants soothes a tired body and soul. Studies show that when people are spending time in their own garden, their anxiety level drops and they feel a bit better. “Gardening gives you a chance to focus on something and put your mind to work with a goal and a task in mind,” Dr. Hutchins, a UNC Health internal medicine physician says, “which is helpful especially now with so much illness and death and talk of death, just to see things growing and things thriving.”

Gardening builds our self-esteem. We may not find ourselves as one who can take the time to help a plant thrive and survive. But with a few tips and tricks easily available online, we might just pull it off. Growing your own plants can be quite a breather and accomplishment. After all, if you were able to make a plant live with little to no knowledge about it, what can you not do?

Gardening is an exercise. After months of being locked up in our houses, afraid of the onset of the virus and the fast-rising of cases in the country, most of us were forced out of our daily routines and into new ones that involve a larger scale of stress but with a whole less avenue to pause, move, and breathe for a while. We may not see it as much but all those shoveling, digging, and raking are actually light exercises. By stretching some of our muscles we are doing our body a favor.

If we look into it, the plant craze is really one of the many things we have come up with to keep us sane. With resorts and most recreational activities closing their doors, we do what we can to get by. With this in mind, the Malagos Garden Resort has just recently launched a “Plant” category on the Malagos Homegrown Produce, our online shop and delivery counterpart in Davao.  Our doors may be closed yet but this is a gentle reminder that we are one with you in this fight against the virus. In the meantime, let us share a piece of nature with you through our new plant products. Good luck!
