Birdwatching in Davao says that: Report on a bird-filled morning at Malagos Garden Resort, 9th January 2021. It wasn't at the Philippine Eagle Center and it wasn't the first Saturday of the month, but in many ways this felt like the good old days. I arrived to Malagos Garden Resort a few minutes after 6am to join a group for morning birding. This is a continuation of the joint Big Year Group/Malagos Garden Resort (MGR) initiative to introduce birding as a resort activity, and an amazing amount has been achieved in just a few months. Present this morning were members of the Big Year Group with me in a support role, trained birdwatching guides from MGR, other staff from MGR and overnight guests of MGR armed with MGR provided binoculars and a specially produced field guide covering the birds that will most likely be seen. A mixed bag of people, more than 20 in total, birding at 6am in Malagos..... just like 1st Saturday birding, except some of the MGR guests were still in their pyjamas. Covid protocols were followed with temperature checks upon arrival, social distancing and facemasks at all times.

One of the first birds was a  perched Guaiabero, followed soon after by a fly-through flock of Philippine Hanging-Parrot. Wintering Gray-streaked Flycatcher was already on the list when I arrived, one of three I counted on the way around. Sunbirds and Flowerpeckers do well at MGR, testament to the many mature flowering and fruiting trees present. Red-keeled and Orange-bellied Flowerpeckers were common and fed in low bushes but the pair of Pygmy Flowerpecker stayed high in the ball of mistletoe above us. The Purple-throated Sunbird that many of us photographed  looks very orange on the belly rather than red, I'm not sure if that's because of the early morning light or because the bird is an intergrade between Purple-throated and the recently split Orange-lined.

Just as with 1st Saturday sessions we split into manageable sized groups and headed in different directions. As others rushed to the river we stayed and enjoyed a small flock of Rufous-crowned Bee-eaters. When we did reach the river it took a while but eventually we were rewarded with fantastic and prolonged views of Southern Silvery Kingfisher, one of the stars of MGR.

With another group Julius picked up Little Bronze-Cuckoo to the site list with an excellent photo to prove the record.

By 830am it was getting too hot but on our way to breakfast we added what may have been early raptor migration to the experience. At first one Grey-faced Buzzard, joined by two more and finally a lone and very early Chinese Sparrowhawk, the four birds making up a miniature kettle.

I don't remember finishing 1st Saturday sessions up the road with a lavish breakfast but here it's all part of the package, including their award-winning hot chocolate. Thank you MGR for the hospitality and the initiative to introduce more people to the wild birds in your area, I think this will be a very popular activity post-Covid.

I managed 38 species for the session but the group list topped an impressive 45 species for the morning.
