Malagos and the Farm to Table Movement

Malagos Garden Resort is a farm-themed resort in Davao City. Herein is where the international award-winning, single-origin Malagos Chocolates are made from tree to bar. Aside from pushing for sustainable farming and sustainable tourism through various educational and recreational activities, Malagos Garden Resort has long pushed for supporting and focusing on uplifting the local economy. Even in our chocolate production, our aim has always been to include the Philippines in the chocolate map of the world which was made possible when we won gold in the international Oscars of chocolate-making and the first Pinoy-made chocolate to do so.

During the onset of the pandemic, the Malagos Garden Resort shifted our gears and became a Davao online grocery and delivery for fresh produce. This is with the intention of making sure that we are helping our local farmers get by. With the sudden closing of the resort and most food establishments, we had to think fast. Since then, we were able to serve you with most of your needs. From farm fresh produce, Malagos signature products even all the way to convenient meal kits, we had you all covered. We have grown and expanded with you the last few months and here are three core reasons why we keep on doing so.

Supporting farm-to-table initiatives. Farm to table is a social movement and concept where food and beverage entities use ingredients and food sourced from local farmers. The next time you order food online, always opt for food or drinks that you confidently know source their ingredients within your region or community. Because these restaurants deal directly with farmers and not through other mediums, you’re sure that the money spent will go directly to farmers and their growing business.

Support local, buy local. Let’s admit it, each small business in the City is striving by the day. It is a long process of getting by while making sure you are safe. In an effort to support our local farmers and to still be with you through these trying times, the Malagos Homegrown Produce budded. While we do our best to keep on giving each one of you a service you no less than deserve, it will be much appreciated if you choose to buy local and support local. Be safe at home and buy fresh homegrown produce, signature products, and even baking needs with us. A small act will go a long way. Malagos recently rolled out our first batch of potted herbs and ornamental plants. Grab yours and let each one grow with you.

Sustainable economy. At its most basic concept, when you buy local more money stays in the community. More money stays in the community when, for example, you buy at a local farmer’s market compared to buying from supermarkets. If you buy from big supermarkets, non-locally owned utilities, and other services earnings flow out. If currency circulates more quickly in the community, the money passes more hands—and more people have had the benefit of the money and what it has purchased for them. The main idea: it’s not about how much money you’ve got, but how much you can keep circulating without letting it leak out.

These days, we are now into indoor gardening too. This means, we are, in one way, growing what we eat too. This is also a way of integrating a sustainable economy that respects the environment. The next time you think of where to buy online fresh vegetables and fruits near me, do check out the Malagos Homegrown Produce and marvel in the bounty of the gardens of Malagos. Have fun!
